Hi! I'm Sonia!

I've been stitching for over 10 years and featured in popular quilting magazines as well as teaching virtual and real-life workshops.

I love hand- and machine-piecing equally, designing quilts that are just a little bit different and combine a variety of skills, as well as mixing modern and traditional styles.

I always have at least one hand-piecing project on the go as it is the ultimate mindful activity!

My favourite thing is to encourage people to take up stitching, try new things and make a project their own by providing them with different options.

I love hearing about the design inspiration behind quilt patterns, so thought I would share the story behind the the Beaufort Quilt!

During the summer of 2021, I visited the gardens of Badminton House, South Gloucestershire.

It's a grand estate with the most incredible conservatories at the back of the house (I would be more tempted to call them an orangery!).

And inside, it was a riot of light, colour and geometric shapes.

My immediate thought was "Oooooh, wouldn't that make a lovely quilt?!"

Over the past few months, I have been working on a design that captures how I felt on the day, using the trellis as a starting point and lots of flowery shapes.

There are so many colour schemes that you could chose, here's just a few examples of how your quilt could look......

Testimonials

"I have loved every minute of it and look forward to the monthly release. The instructions are clear and concise. It has been a delight to be a part of this group. Sonia offers supportive “sit'n'sew” evenings to ask questions not only about the quilt but other projects that might be stumping you. This has been brilliant, Thanks 😊"

Adventure Quilt BOM, 2021

"I have enjoyed this BOM.....I found the instructions easy to follow, I particularly liked the choices given for each round so that the final quilt became your own individual creation rather than like many others. Sonia also responds very quickly to any comments or queries and seems very approachable"

Adventure Quilt BOM, 2021

The Mindful QAL was my perfect refuge in this difficult year. It gave me the opportunity to learn, to create, and feel a part of a quilting community, each month waiting for the new block instructions. I have loved watching my quilt grow, knowing there is not another like it in the world.

Printer (for months with templates, you will be provided with full-size PDF files that you can download at home).

This is a large quilt finishing at approximately 76" x 79".

The quilt has been designed as a scrap quilt (although it can easily be more co-ordinated!), although you can use background fabric for the trellis and border if you would prefer.

Fabric requirements will be published on the 17th December 2021.

The Beaufort Quilt includes a mix of machine and hand sewing. Where blocks can be pieced either way, I will include instructions for both.

Skill wise, we will be practising accuracy, machine piecing, hand-piecing, curves and applique. Instructions will be included for applique by hand or by machine, depending on your preference.

This quilt has been designed with hand-piecing in mind, but can easily be done by machine too. I will be hand-piecing the majority of the blocks and machine piecing the sashing.

Every quilter was new at some point, and my favourite way of learning is by jumping in at the deep end and just giving it a go!

However, I am also a big fan of detail and will be including step-by-step written instructions along with video's for each months blocks/borders. If you have any questions, please do get in touch.

I will be making the quilt next year too - a few steps ahead of you - so I'm afraid there's no finished pictures to share with you just yet.

This is your quilt and life happens!

There is no pressure to keep up: the instructions will always be available to you when you are ready to get back to it, and you will receive a copy of the full pattern at the end of the year.

The Beaufort Quilt BOM 2022 is ©2021 by fabric & flowers. All rights reserved. This pattern has been designed for personal use only.

I have put a lot of time and effort into this design so that we can all have a fun.

I would love it if you sew this project with friends - just please make sure that everyone buys their own copy of the pattern. Anyone found sharing log-in details will, I'm afraid, be blocked from the page.

Please also respect my copyright when sharing on social media and do not post detailed measurements or specific techniques that have been included within the course. Thank you.
